Have you heard about the Project to collect the names of fields in Co. Westmeath?

Often the names given to fields refer to local history or folklore that is not always documented. Our field names are being lost as land changes ownership and as members of the older generations pass on, so it is important to record as many as we can now.

Last year 750 names were recorded in Westmeath (mainly in the parishes of Taughmon and Drumraney). These names can are now available on mapviewer on the website: meitheal.logainm.ie/westmeath-field-names  and in future we hope to compile a publication on the Fieldnames of Westmeath.

This Project is being supported by the Heritage Council and Westmeath County Council. If you would like more information see aengusfinnegan.ie/field-names

If your community group would like to get involved in recording the field names in your area contact the Heritage Officer 044 9332098 or heritage@westmeathcoco.ie

Thanks,

Melanie
