Dear Stakeholder,

Uisce Éireann is developing its first National Wastewater and Drainage Plan (NWWDP), which will establish a long-term, evidence-based framework for understanding public wastewater system performance, assessing future risks and identifying planning and investment needs to 2055. The Plan will support environmental protection, sustainable growth, housing delivery and economic development, helping to ensure wastewater infrastructure continues to meet Ireland’s future needs.

Public consultation on the Proposed Approach and Strategic Context and the proposed scope of the Strategic Environmental Assessment commenced 22nd October and will run until the 17th December 2026.

We are seeking your views on:

  • the challenges, opportunities and future trends that should shape the Plan;
  • the proposed approach to developing the NWWDP;
  • the proposed Performance Indicators;
  • the scope and methodology of the Strategic Environmental Assessment; and
  • how Uisce Éireann should communicate and engage as the Plan develops.

Feedback will inform the preparation of the Draft NWWDP and its accompanying environmental assessments.  A key element of the consultation is the proposed set of national Performance Indicators, which will provide a consistent framework for assessing wastewater system performance and future vulnerability. We particularly welcome feedback on whether these indicators are clear, meaningful, and appropriate.

Attached to this email is the consultation information leaflet and the other consultation documents are available at www.water.ie/nwwdp.
